Ex-WWE star Growing Title Collection: Will New Championships Lose Prestige?

The decision by WWE to introduce two new titles has left EC3, a former champion, feeling disheartened. As a veteran wrestler, EC3 believes that the sheer proliferation of titles has devalued the significance of winning a championship. He is not alone in his concern, as other promotions such as All Elite Wrestling (AEW), National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), and Impact Wrestling (TNA) have also felt the need to create multiple championships, leading to a situation where a wrestler’s championship wins may not necessarily carry the same level of significance as they once did.

EC3, who held the 24/7 Championship four times, felt that the title did not carry the same prestige as other championships, such as the world championship, and that his four wins were essentially meaningless. His criticisms are not without merit, as the ease with which wrestlers can win championships has led to a sense of complacency and the devaluation of the title. The lack of prestige associated with winning a title has also led to a decline in the overall quality of wrestling, as wrestlers focus more on winning the title rather than putting on a good match.

The oversaturation of the market has also led to a decline in viewership, as fans become fatigued of the constant changes and lack of significance associated with the title. Furthermore, the abundance of titles has created a situation where it can be difficult for fans and wrestling historians to keep track of which titles are most prestigious. This lack of clarity and significance has led to a dilution of the impact of winning a championship, making it seem mundane and unimportant.

Not everyone shares EC3’s concerns, however. Bayley, a 35-year-old wrestler, believes that the introduction of new titles could be beneficial to the women’s division. She acknowledges that it would take time and effort to establish the new titles as credible, but she believes that someone could make it happen. Bayley’s comments highlight the potential advantages of introducing new titles, such as creating new rivalries and storylines, providing more opportunities for women to compete at the top level, and giving the promotion a fresh and exciting dynamic.

However, the success of the new titles will depend on how WWE handles their introduction. The promotion needs to establish a strong hierarchy and set of championship reigns to give the titles significance, as well as a well-thought-out storyline and a clear direction on how to integrate the new titles into the existing narrative. If WWE fails to do so, the new titles may be relegated to secondary status, forgotten in the shuffle of WWE’s multiple championships.

Ultimately, WWE’s decision to introduce new titles is a step in the right direction, but it is crucial that the promotion handles the introduction properly. If done correctly, the addition of new titles could provide a fresh and exciting dynamic to the promotion, but if not, it could be a cheap gimmick that fails to resonate with fans.
